From Watts to Words: Google Breaks Down Gemini’s Energy Per Query

From Watts to Words: Google Breaks Down Gemini’s Energy Per Query

Google recently published a detailed technical report revealing the environmental footprint of its Gemini AI apps—marking the first time a major tech company has shared per-query energy, water, and carbon data at this level of granularity.

Key Findings from Google’s Report

  • Energy Use per Prompt: A median Gemini text prompt consumes 0.24 watt-hours (Wh)—roughly the same as watching TV for less than 9 seconds.
  • Carbon Emissions: Each prompt emits 0.03 grams of CO₂ equivalent (gCO₂e).
  • Water Consumption: About 0.26 milliliters per prompt—equivalent to five drops of water.
  • Efficiency Gains: Over the past year, Gemini’s energy use per prompt dropped 33x, and its carbon footprint fell 44x, while output quality improved.

How Google Measured It

Google’s methodology goes beyond just counting active chip usage:
  • Includes idle machines, cooling systems, and power conversion overhead.
  • Tracks full system dynamic power across its data centers.
  • Uses Mixture-of-Experts architecture and custom TPUs (like Ironwood) to optimize compute efficiency.

Industry Reactions

While many praised the transparency, some experts raised concerns:
  • Critics argue Google may have omitted indirect water usage and relied on market-based carbon offsets, which could understate the true impact.
  • Others say the report sets a new benchmark for responsible AI disclosure, even if it’s not perfect.

Mahindra Lifespaces Launches Carbon Calculator to Allow Individuals Access Their CO2 Footprint

Mahindra Lifespaces Launches Carbon Calculator to Allow Individuals Access Their CO2 Footprint
  • Mr. Anand Mahindra announced the #WinAGreenHome contest via X (formerly Twitter) to inspire collective action against climate change
  • The contest is about becoming aware of the adverse environmental impact we have and the change we can make together
  • One lucky winner gets a green home worth ₹ 1 Crore at Mahindra Vista, Kandivali East, Mumbai
Mahindra Lifespaces has announced an initiative to raise awareness about factors contributing to climate change. By highlighting the impact of individual carbon footprints, the company aims to inspire collective action.

For instance, one hour of scrolling on social media adds ~70g of carbon to one’s footprint, while a ten-minute longer hot shower contributes about 2kg.

In this light, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited (MLDL), the real estate and infrastructure development arm of the Mahindra Group, introduced a Carbon Calculator.

Designed for user-friendly interaction, the Carbon Calculator allows individuals to assess their carbon footprint based on factors like food, transport, and power consumption. With a process taking less than 5 minutes, users receive a clear and accessible graph illustrating their carbon impact. This initiative marks MLDL's commitment to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to drive change towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Viral Oza, Chief Marketing Officer, Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd., said, "At Mahindra Lifespaces, we recognize the significance of every individual’s contribution in the battle against climate change. Our goal is to highlight the environmental impact of everyday actions and instigate positive changes in daily habits for a sustainable future. Through the accompanying contest, we aspire to transform sustainable living into an engaging and informative experience. This competition presents an exciting opportunity for participants to win a green home while encouraging actions that contribute to a greener future."

The announcement of this initiative came in the form of a tweet from Mr. Anand Mahindra and Dr. Anish Shah. The grand prize for the contest is a green home worth ₹ 1 Crore at the newly launched project in Kandivali East, Mahindra Vista. The result from the Carbon Calculator should inspire individuals to take a meaningful step in reducing their environmental impact and contribute to building a better world for future generations.

SAP and Infosys Introduce Industry Cloud Solution to Identify, Track, Predict, and Refine Carbon Emissions During S&OP

SAP and Infosys Introduce Industry Cloud Solution to Identify, Track, Predict, and Refine Carbon Emissions During S&OP

For companies to act sustainably, responsibly, and efficiently, they must harness the power of data-driven decisions and advanced technology to reduce their carbon footprint and create sustainable product portfolios.

At a September 2022 Hack2Build event, Indian IT & technology major, Infosys, also a partner of SAP, presented a solution for organizations to identify, track, predict, and refine carbon emissions during sales and operations planning (S&OP) and make sustainable decisions. The solution, Sustainable S&OP and Carbon Footprint Management, was built using SAP Integrated Business Planning (SAP IBP) for Supply Chain, SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), SAP Integration Suite, and SAP Sustainability Footprint Management.

Built on SAP Integrated Business Planning (IBP), S/4HANA and SAP Product Foot print management the Infosys carbon footprint solution calculates carbon emission based on greenhouse gas protocols and Global warming potential across procurement, production and distribution processes. Infosys’ carbon footprint solution calculates carbon emissions based on greenhouse gas protocols and global warming potential factors across an organization’s procurement, production, and distribution processes. It helps calculate key information, such as estimates of CO2e emissions per order level, thereby helping to make decisions that can ensure a smaller carbon footprint.

The solution also provides an innovative framework to help companies identify, track, predict, and refine their carbon emissions numbers throughout the entire supply chain process.

Infosys is delighted to publish the Infosys Sustainable S&OP and Carbon Footprint Management Solution through the SAP-validated partner use case program,” said Atul Chorbele, AVP at Infosys. “We are confident that customers across industries will benefit from adopting this solution.”

Holger Brammer, Global Partner Ecosystem vice president at SAP, praised this partner solution and the development process: “It was impressive to see how fast Infosys developed this solution on SAP BTP and integrated it with SAP S/4HANA, SAP IBP, and SAP Sustainability Footprint Management. I’m quite confident that this solution will resonate very well with customers.”

Infosys’ solution is part of the SAP-validated partner use case program. The program was established to give SAP service partners the ability to showcase, position, and promote solutions and spotlight their expertise of SAP Business Technology Platform, leveraging the power of SAP’s vast customer base and industry networks.

The SAP-validated partner use case program offers service partners the ability to:
