India’s COVID-19 Resurgence: What the Numbers Reveal and Why Vigilance Matters

India’s COVID-19 Resurgence: What the Numbers Reveal and Why Vigilance Matters

India is witnessing a fresh uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 257 active infections reported across nine states as of May 19, 2025. While the numbers remain relatively low compared to previous waves, health experts urge caution, particularly as new Omicron subvariants— JN.1 and its descendants LF.7 and NB.1.8 —drive infections

Where Are Cases Rising?

The states reporting the highest increases include:
  • Kerala: 95 cases (sharpest rise)
  • Maharashtra: 56 cases
  • Tamil Nadu: 66 cases
  • Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Sikkim: Smaller clusters.
Despite the rise, experts emphasize that no new variant of concern has emerged, and hospitalizations remain low. However, the actual number of infections may be higher than reported, as many individuals with mild symptoms are not getting tested.

Why Are Cases Rising Again?

Several factors contribute to the resurgence:
  • Waning immunity: Many people have not received booster doses.
  • Relaxed preventive behavior: Mask-wearing and social distancing have declined.
  • Seasonal effects: Increased travel and gatherings may be fueling transmission.
  • Global trends: Countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have seen spikes due to Omicron subvariants.

What Symptoms Should You Watch For?

The dominant JN.1 subvariant typically causes mild symptoms, including:
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Runny nose
  • Occasional shortness of breath (in vulnerable individuals).

What Can You Do?

Health officials recommend:
  1. Wearing masks in crowded places and enclosed spaces.
  2. Avoiding unnecessary travel if symptomatic.
  3. Getting tested promptly if symptoms appear.
  4. Following hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.
  5. Staying up to date with vaccinations and booster doses.

The Bigger Picture: Lessons from the Pandemic

While India’s current COVID-19 situation is not alarming, it serves as a reminder that pandemic preparedness must remain a priority. The rise in cases highlights the importance of genomic surveillance, public health infrastructure, and community awareness in managing future outbreaks.

As the world moves beyond the peak of the pandemic, vigilance—not panic—is key. Staying informed and adopting basic preventive measures can help curb the spread and protect vulnerable populations.

COVID-19: Ola in talks with States, Centre to offer vehicles, kitchen services

Ride-hailing major Ola is in discussions with various state governments and the Centre to offer its transportation and kitchen services amid the 21-day lockdown across the country.

Ola, which is already working with the Karnataka government, is in talks with other States and the Centre to extend its transportation services to help facilitate transit of healthcare professionals, senior citizens, government officials and quick response teams who need mobility options.

Ola co-founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal in a tweet said: "Thank you Sir! We‘re humbled to join hands with GoK and other state Governments in offering all support we can in these times. @Olacabs driver-partners and @Olafoods_India kitchen staff are proud to join various essential service providers in #IndiafightsCorona #StrongerTogether".

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan in a tweet said Ola has agreed to provide 500 vehicles for COVID-19 related activities in Karnataka.

He added that these vehicles will be used for commuting by doctors and for COVID-19 related activities.

According to sources, Ola is engaged in conversations with Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Telengana, and similar proposals have also been sent to Health Ministry and Prime Minister's Office.

A source said government departments are helping with required permits and procurement of protective gear wherever applicable to ensure safety of the drivers.

Also, driver earnings on a cost to cost basis are being provided by the government.

Ola has also offered to prepare food from its cloud kitchens (over 40 in six cities) and transportation of the food to major nodal centres for the government to supply to medical professionals, daily wagers, migrant labourers, and security teams on ground, the source added.

An e-mail sent to Ola did not elicit a response.

On March 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a three-week national lockdown as part of efforts to combat the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Over 1,000 people in India have tested positive for coronavirus so far with 29 deaths being reported.

With the implementation of the lockdown , the government has allowed only people in essential services like healthcare, banking and media to commute. Limited mobility options have made it difficult for these people to travel to their workplace. PTI SR

Mark Zuckerberg and his Wife Pledge $25 Mn for Researching COVID-19 Treatments

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the philanthropic arm of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, has announced plans to team up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to donate USD 25 million to a research fund exploring possible COVID-19 treatments.

"I'm really proud to share that (The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is) going to be joining Gates and others to put together something they're calling the therapeutics accelerator to fight coronavirus," Chan told "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King.

Chan told King that their goal is "to fund a group to screen all the drugs that we know have potential effects against coronavirus."

Zuckerberg said one drug can often be used to treat multiple diseases.

"You can basically take all those drugs that have already been screened as safe and test them to see if they might also have a positive impact for either preventing the coronavirus or reducing the symptoms and making it less damaging," he said.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is sinking the cash into an effort, run by Zuckerberg's mentor Bill Gates, that is exploring new possible antiviral drugs that could protect people from the disease.

The donation is among the biggest single grants to an outside organization ever given by CZI, established in 2015.

CZI's gift is the second biggest tech philanthropy donation for the coronavirus that has been publicly unveiled, falling short of only the Gates Foundation's donation to the same therapeutics fund.

The contribution from Zuckerberg and his wife comes after the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launched the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator earlier in March. Mastercard and charity foundation Wellcome are also partnering with Bill & Melinda Gates as part of the initiative, which started with USD 125 million in seed funding at its launch.

The goal of the project is to develop affordable treatments to COVID-19 that can be distributed at scale.

The accelerator will evaluate new and repurpose existing drugs to for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, and hopes to use its research to fight other viral pathogens in the long term as well. The COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator will also be working with the World Health Organization on the project. PTI SHK
