Honda Unveils First Electric Motorcycle WN7 at EICMA 2025 in Milan

Honda unveiled its first electric motorcycle, the Honda WN7 to the public for the first time., at EICMA 2025 (the Milan Motorcycle Shows; Press days: November 4-5, Public days: November 6-9) in Milan, Italy.

Honda WN7

Key Features of Honda WN7

Development concept

The Honda WN7 is the first electric naked model in the FUN category developed under Honda’s new electric motorcycle brand direction. Its development concept, “Be the Wind,” expresses the joy of freely gliding through the air with quietness unique to an electric vehicle. Riders can directly sense the sounds and atmosphere of their surroundings—the conversations and laughter of people on the street, the rustling of leaves—experiences not possible with ICE (internal combustion engine) models. Reflecting its developers’ passion, the WN7’s smooth yet strong torque acceleration and agile handling allows riders to enjoy the liberating feeling of riding like the wind.

Design

Aiming to refine functionality and express essence, the design features a seamless, smooth surface on the areas the rider touches, while combining a distinctive and powerful silhouette. Its signature horizontal light bar will serve as a common design identity for Honda’s future electric motorcycles.

The WN7 also debuts a dedicated color theme for Honda’s electric motorcycles, featuring a black-based body accented with gold component parts. Like the signature lighting, this color theme will be adopted across upcoming global electric models.

Frameless chassis

Unlike conventional motorcycles that use a frame connecting the front and rear of the body, the WN7 adopts a frameless structure in which the centrally positioned aluminum battery case forms part of the main frame. The head pipe supporting the steering and the pivot bracket supporting the rear are both directly connected to the centrally located power unit. By eliminating the traditional frame, the WN7 achieves not only weight reduction but also greater layout flexibility, contributing significantly to its slim and compact proportions.

In addition, positioning the heavy battery pack at the center of the chassis also enhances mass centralization and agile handling.

Integrated motor-inverter unit

A newly developed, compact and lightweight water-cooled motor with an integrated inverter powers the WN7. It delivers a maximum output of 50 kW, equivalent to a 600 cc ICE motorcycle, and maximum torque of 100 Nm, comparable to a 1000 cc class ICE motorcycle. This ensures powerful yet composed performance both in city riding and on open roads.

Power from the motor is transmitted via a newly designed gearbox to a belt-drive system, which drives the rear wheel while contributing to quiet operation.

Drive battery and charging standards

The WN7 is equipped with a newly developed 9.3 kWh fixed lithium-ion battery. It supports both CCS2 fast charging¹ and Type 2 normal charging², compatible with standard household outlets in many regions. With a fast charger, the battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes, allowing for quick recharging on the go and reducing the stress of waiting time.

In addition, normal charging fully charges the battery from 0% to 100% in under 2.4 hours³, providing a cruising range of 140 km (WMTC mode) on a full charge.

Regenerative braking, Deceleration Selector, and Walking Speed Mode

During deceleration with the throttle off, the WN7’s motor performs energy regeneration while providing regenerative braking⁴. Riders can adjust the level of deceleration using the Deceleration Selector on the left handlebar switch, enabling smooth low-speed control with minimal brake operation or a gliding sensation with reduced deceleration—offering a new riding feel distinct from ICE motorcycles.

The WN7 is also equipped with a Walking Speed Mode, allowing the rider to move the bike forward or backward slowly using the left-hand switch and throttle—useful for parking or maneuvering in tight urban spaces.

The Honda WN7 will be produced at Honda’s Kumamoto Factory - the company’s global hub for motorcycle production. Honda will introduce the model sequentially to global markets where electrification shift is advancing, as the company accelerates electrification of motorcycles on a global scale.

[3] Charging time may vary depending on the charging environment (such as temperature). Charging time based on Honda measurements.

[4] Regenerative braking may not be activated depending on the remaining battery capacity.

Meet Spero, India’s First Crowdfunded Eco-Friendly Electric Bike

The environment problem is real, and its high time that the citizens of the Earth start taking a stock of their actions and really do something to fish the world out of this crisis. It is for sure a problem that will take a long time to get solved but in order to reach there, the mankind needs to start with small-small steps everyday. Spero, India's first crowdfunded eco-friendly electric bike is a step in that very direction.

Manufactured by Milltex Engineers, a Coimbatore based company, the Spero electric bike offers a smart alternative for the current urban commutation problems. Though light in weight, the e-bike isn't particularly light on pocket. The base Spero model starts at an expensive Rs. 29,900.

The central idea behind Spero is quite simple. The makers wanted to manufacture a powered bicycle which is small and lightweight, hence very portable to use. For people who use their motorcycles/cars to get to the metro/train stations, this can serve to be a suitable alternative option.

Massive adoption of the Spero can have a real, significant effect on the current traffic congestion, pollution problems faced almost daily by the urban population and might even improve general public health by propagating a healthier and active lifestyle.

The company recently concluded the first crowdfunding campaign for the high-powered electric bike and raised INR 38,65,000 from 147 funders, way more than its goal of INR 30 Lakhs. The second campaign is currently LIVE and one can book themselves a Spero e-bike through this second campaign. With 56 days remaining, the second round of crowdfunding campaign has currently raised INR 97,200 of its goal of INR 15,00,000.

Running on a 48KV lithium-ion battery with a two-year warranty, the 5-Speed electric Gear shift bike can reach its top speed of 25kmph in mere 10 seconds, when the motor is running. Further, the biggest relief is that the battery is detachable and hence can be charged by anyone, anywhere. According to claims of Milltex Engineers, the battery charges from 20 to 80 percent in just six hours.

The e-bike comes in 3 models:

The idea for the e-bike was conceived and developed by 36-year old, Manikandan, an MBA having ample experience in the manufacturing realm.

The bicycle, which is a result of three years of intense research and development, can be considered as another brilliantly executed ‘Made in India’ story, well almost. According to the company, the e-bike has been made with with a judicious mix of materials that were locally sourced and some key imported components –such as the motor and the tyres come from partners in Korea and the battery comes from Samsung.

This startup could become the Tesla of electric motorcycles

While biking might not be that famous a sport among the current generation right now, a California-based startup Alta Motors is working towards bringing the trend back.

It has been nine years since the year 2007 that the company has been meticulously working towards introducing the ultimate enthusiast bike to the American market, and the product is, at last, is now almost ready to be unveiled.
Named Redshift, the company's first electric motorcycle, is all set to roll out deliveries in Fall this year. Apparently, it has already back-ordered 13 weeks.

According to a statement given by Mark Fenigstein, Alta Motors co-founder and CEO, to a tech magazine, the consumer demand for electric motorcycles really escalated when Tesla became hip and popular. This is when Fenigstein decided to follow the road taken by Tesla, and try becoming an Industry leader in the electric motorcycle market.

Fenigstein believes that it was Tesla that become a trendsetter in the electric transport market and broke the ice with the public regarding the technology, and inspired other players in the market to also take the plunge.

Unfortunately, the scene wasn't the same always. A few years ago, consumers had almost shut themselves away from the idea of ever warming up to the idea of electric bikes. But over the years, the pollution crisis, major advancements in battery technology and consumers growing liking for electric vehicles, have helped these e-motorbikes become an attractive option for personal transport.

Performance

If for once you're thinking, being an electric one, these bikes won't able to deliver you an experience that you want on the road, you're mistaken. According to Fenigstein, Alta's Redshift bikes have been designed so as to provide the riders with as much control as they would need over their bikes. With Redshift bikes, Alta aims to help riders progress as a more confident and faster motorist.

The Redshift bikes are strong enough to handle both motocross jumps and potholes. Similar to Tesla's first car, the Roadster, Alta's Redshift has the potential to become the first of a wider range of electric motorcycles. But, for now, the startup is only focused on making Redshift reach to the customers. Currently, the RedShift SM sells for $15,495 and RedShift MX for $15,000.

Manufactured in California

Quite similar to Tesla, Alta also has its own factory based in California. According to Fenigstein, having its base in Northern California is a strategic business decision at the company's end.

Fenigstein further divulged that the close proximity of Alta's San Francisco headquarters to the factory is crucial for company's R&D department and the fast development and manufacturing speed that the company aims to maintain. In addition to this, it also allows the company's engineering team to be in contact with the manufacturing team in real-time, which results in better construction of bikes.

Powerful Battery

alta_ebike3

According to the company, their bike's battery is about 80 percent or five years ahead of the time in terms of range per pound. This means, the company is successfully able to fit more battery capacity into a lighter and smaller unit.

Apparently, the company's motor is much powerful when compared to others. It is about half the size of any state of the art 40 horsepower electric motor.

Tesla co-founders as investors

In addition to all the operational and technological similarities that we have already explained in the article between Tesla and Alta Motors, there's another similarity that one cannot ignore.

The company has found strong backing in two Tesla co-founders, Martin Eberhard and Mark Tarppening in terms of investment. Both Eberhard and Tarppening had a significant role to play in Tesla's finance and craft during its early days.
