HP Bets Big on India: Plans 100% Local PC Manufacturing in 3–5 Years

HP Bets Big on India: Plans 100% Local PC Manufacturing in 3–5 Years

Global technology giant HP has announced plans to manufacture all personal computers sold in India locally within the next three to five years, marking a significant boost to the country’s electronics manufacturing ambitions under the government’s Make in India initiative.

HP’s Chief Executive Officer Enrique Lores, speaking during a recent visit to India, said the company is committed to deepening its presence in the country by not only meeting domestic demand through local production but also by turning India into an export hub for PCs in the future.

Our goal is that in three to five years, every PC we sell in India will be manufactured in IndiaLores said, adding that the company is also preparing to export India-made devices to global markets.

Rising Demand for AI PCs

The announcement comes at a time when demand for AI-enabled PCs is surging. According to HP, nearly 25% of its shipments in India over the past three quarters were AI-powered PCs, a sharp increase from just 5% six months ago. The company expects this trend to accelerate as artificial intelligence becomes a standard feature in personal computing.

Strategic Shift Amid Global Supply Chain Realignment

HP’s move reflects broader shifts in global supply chains, as technology companies diversify manufacturing away from China amid geopolitical tensions. Lores noted that the world is increasingly splitting into two technology ecosystems—one led by China and another by the West—making India a strategically vital market and production base.

Alignment with India’s Industrial Policy

The decision aligns with India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware, which offers financial incentives to companies that expand local manufacturing. India has already attracted major investments from smartphone makers like Apple, and HP’s commitment signals a similar trajectory for the PC industry.

Industry analysts say the move could:
  • Create thousands of jobs in electronics manufacturing.
  • Reduce India’s dependence on imports.
  • Lower costs for consumers by cutting duties and logistics expenses.
  • Position India as a global hub for AI-driven computing devices.

HP’s Market Position in India

HP currently leads the Indian PC market, with strong demand from enterprises, small businesses, and consumers in smaller towns. By localizing production, the company aims to strengthen its supply chain resilience and expand its reach into emerging markets within India.

Looking Ahead

HP expects the next five years to bring new device categories and ambient AI experiences, reshaping how PCs are designed and used. With India at the center of its strategy, the company is betting that local manufacturing will not only serve domestic needs but also make the country a key node in the global technology supply chain.

HP Launches 3D Printers in India, Prices Start at ₹2.5 Crore

Two years after unveiling it own branded 3D Printers, technology giant HP today finally launched its 3D printing solution in India too. The prices are starting from Rs 2.5 crore, to tap into sectors like manufacturing, education and defence.

3D printing refers to creation of a 3-dimensional object in which layers of materials are formed with computers controlling the process.

HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solution will be available in India primarily through the company’s specialised partners. It has signed up Imaginarium and Adroitec as the first resellers of its 3D printers for India.

Currently, the printers use plastic as raw material. However, HP has announced its intent to use metal and colours for the 3D printers in future.

“Industry 4.0 is being impacted by a range of technologies -- Internet of Things, Cloud etc. The launch of our 3D printers in India comes at a time when the government is pushing manufacturing in India and we see a lot of potential for our printers,” HP India Managing Director Sumeer Chandra told PTI.

He added that the product would be aimed at sectors like manufacturing, defence, healthcare, education and product labs as well as service bureaus that provide printing as a service.

The price tag of Rs 2.50 crore includes pre and post processing unit, the 3D printer and initial consumables. It also includes 3-year maintenance and service contract.

Chandra explained that using 3D printing, making prototypes is faster and competitively priced with current options.

He added that these 3D printers also allow for better customisation.

According to industry reports, the global 3D printing market is expected to be worth over USD 32 billion by 2023, growing at a CAGR of more than 25% between 2017 and 2023.

The reports attribute the growth to factors like ease of development of customised products, ability to reduce overall manufacturing costs, and government investments in the 3D printing projects for the development and deployment of the technology.

As per a 6Wresearch, the Indian 3D printer market is expected to cross USD 79 million by 2021, with automotive applications accounting for the biggest chunk of business.

It has been a long time that HP, maker of World's biggest printer, has been teasing the tech enthusiasts with its 3D printer plans for quite sometime. Recently, during a 3D printing conference held in the New York City, the company had demonstrated how a plastic chain it had printed on its prototype 3D printing machine was strong enough to lift a car.

Currently, HP is also in midst of testing printing machines that can also print integrated circuits. It has actually done the same chain test, but this time with embedded circuits printed in that clearly showed the strain and stress that the chain was suffering.

In 2016, we profiled a Mumbai based startup called MaherSoft that builds Industrial and consumer grade 3D Printers in India available at cost of about Rs.75,000, which is far cheaper than 3D Printers by HP.

More such startups are in India that build and offer 3D Printers for prototyping purpose available for much affordable rates such as Pramaan and Brahma3. These printers are however not for commercial or large scale industrial purpose like ones by HP and Mahersoft.

India Gets Asia’s first Virtual Reality (VR) Lounge in Noida

PVR Cinemas in association with HP India has launched Asia's first Virtual Reality (VR) Lounge at PVR ECX, Mall of India, Noida. Movie goers can enjoy a mix of movie trailers, games and other interactive content like action sports and drama at four such VR Docks or Pods, equipped with technology by HP, located at the theatre.

This PVR & HP partnership will see the roll out of 10 such virtual reality lounges across PVRs in India, with three each in Delhi and Bengaluru. From crouching behind turrets to diving on the ground to avoid strafing bullets to seeing a grotesque image lurking nearby, those few intense minutes will surely keep movie lovers fastened to the HP VR Lounge. Besides the best in class technology, the HP VR Lounge, also provides a whole new library of fascinating and adventurous immersive and interactive content curated from various different genres like drama, fiction, sci-fi, horror, action etc.

The VR Docks use HP Omen desktops & laptops along with HTC headsets and controllers. PVR and HP note that prolonged use of headsets could cause nausea, hence the experiences range from a duration of 1.5 minutes to 10 minutes each.

"HP's innovation in the area of VR is yet another first from us where we continuously strive to provide the latest technology and world class experience to our customers," added Ketan Patel, Senior Director, Personal Systems, HP Inc. India.

While VR Content is truly immersive, Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR Cinemas, said that "VR will not drive away people away from movie watching, as it can't be viewed for more than 15 minutes at a stretch due to headset weight and feeling of dizziness. Hence people can experience VR while waiting for their film to begin."

Not Many Know That HP Launched Desktop 3D Printer Months Back

Earlier in the year, we reported about how HP was planning on launching two industrial 3D printers, Jet Fusion 3200 and 4200, that would be capable of producing objects at a speed that is ten times faster and cost almost half the amount as any similar printer in the market. And the great news is, these awesome printers are finally here.

The global printer and personal computer major unveiled the world’s first production-ready commercial 3D printing system at the largest 3D additive manufacturing conference, RAPID. The launch can be considered as HP's next big move in its mission towards bringing disruptive manufacturing solutions to the market.

By joining hands with biggies like Nike and BMW for its commercial 3D printers, HP aims to completely revolutionize the design, prototyping and manufacturing industry.

The HP Jet Fusion 3D Printing Solution isn't just like any regular 3D printer. According to HP, it is a truly integrated end-to-end solution which they have designed to overcome all the existing pain points in the 3D printing processes currently in action.

An enclosed, automated processing station works towards providing customers a cleaner materials loading and mixing experience. The solution includes a build unit that moves into the HP Jet Fusion 3D Printer, where HP fusing and detailing agents are at work with HP Multi Jet Fusion technology and materials so as to deliver the customers not only fine details and dimensional accuracy, but optimal mechanical properties as well. The build unit then returns to the Processing Station, which consists of an enclosed unpacking and material collection system for cleaner extraction and a fast-cooling module. With its fast cooling process, HP provides its customers the power to increase the number of parts they produce within a day, when compared to any other existing cooling processes.

By having the capability of printing functional parts at the individual voxel level (a voxel is the 3D equivalent of a 2D pixel in traditional printing), HP's 3D printers provides its customers an unprecedented ability to transform part properties and deliver mass customization.

Finally, HP To Make Desktop 3D Printers

HP, one of the most famous and reliable printer company in the world, has finally decided to embrace the third dimension world.

According to the latest announcement made by the company itself, it will be soon releasing two industrial 3D printers, Jet Fusion 3200 and 4200, that will be capable of producing objects at a speed ten times faster and a cost half as expensive as any similar printer currently in the market. The printers will be able to churn out good quality ready-to-use products, but unfortunately these wonder printers aren't meant for average office or home use as their range will start at a staggering $130,000.

According to a statement given by HP’s head of 3D printing, Stephen Nigro, the production model prints can be expected to have the same level of reliability and durability. He further divulged, that almost 50 percent of the parts for the printer will be printed by one of the printers itself. The company is looking to create a printer that prints itself.

In the beginning, the company had decided to focus entirely on machines that would have been able to printout reliable plastic products, but it has now decided to launch a “material app store” using which the third-party companies will be able to develop materials for the Jet Fusions printers. These materials sill then be vetted by HP and sold at their stores.

Currently, HP is also in midst of testing printing machines that can also print integrated circuits. It has actually done the same chain test, but this time with embedded circuits printed in that clearly showed the strain and stress that the chain was suffering.

According to Nigro, the company is also planning on printing metals on its printers in the future, but that won't be happening anytime soon. "Metals is a research project for us," he stated. Further, the tech giant is also laying its focus on researching on printers that will be able to print out multiple materials all at once. HP's current focus is completely on producing machines that will be able to produce products that are ready to use.

While 3D printers available in the market till now have been successful in grabbing the eyeballs, they have somehow not been able to meet the high expectations of the people. Most of the 3D printers are just used for prototyping, as they haven't been able to print quickly at scale, or haven’t printed with materials that can last long.

Both the Fusion printers will have a printing bed that allows them to print roughly 2,500 1.5-inch plastic gears in about 10 hours time. According to Nigro, the above mentioned printers will be little cheaper on the pocket when compared to the ones that have already been launched in the market. Further, he also acknowledged the fact that in certain cases, they might be able to replace traditional manufacturing processes, wherein molds of products need to be manufactured.

HP's corporate partners like Nike,Siemens and BMW, will be the first ones to lay their hands on the printers. All of the corporates are looking forward to integrating 3D printing into their production lines. Everyone else who desire to own the 3D marvel will have to wait by the end of 2016. Well, don't be disappointed. If you really want to experience the 3D beauty benefits before the end of the year, there is one way to achieve that: Shapeways, a company that sells 3D printing services, and 3D-printed objects, will be among the firsts to get Jet Fusion.

For people hoping that HP would one day produce desktop 3D printers, that an average person would be able to buy on Amazon or any other e-commerce website, HP doesn't disappoints here as well. According to Nigro, the company has a roadmap to get its solutions into smaller environments.

Snapfish, once bought by HP is now on sale

snapfish for sale

Snapfish, a web based photo sharing app owned by Hewlett-Packard Co. will probably go on sale in the coming months.  According to sources, HP is contemplating selling Snapfish and has also started having private meetings and discussions with multiple private equity and buyers regarding the same.

The web based photo sharing app was bought by HP in 2005 for a whopping amount of $300 million. The company is considered a non-core part of the company and sits within HP’s printing and personal systems group. No one from HP is ready to comment on the sale for now.

Snapfish has around 90 million members from 12 countries who have stored about two billion unique photos online.

HP is considering sticking to its knitting as it is eyeing a successful second quarter of sales growth in a row after an eleven year declining revenue period. HP posted a 1 percent year over year sales uptick to $27.6 billion for the fiscal Q3 2014. The product which did wonders for the company are its PCs. They showed a 12 percent increase in its revenue for the period.

In 2013, Hewlett-Packard Co. had replaced Todd Bradley, long time head of printing and personal business with Dion Weisler, who was a former Lenovo Executive. After leaving the tech company, Bradley joined Tibco Software Inc. as the company’s President.

Snapfish is facing tough competition from another online photo sharing services provider called Shutterfly Inc. in the sale market. A lot of prospective buyers have expressed interest in both the companies.

According to sources, Shutterfly had already hired Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners this summer in order to search for a buyer, and it is expected to finish its work in another couple of weeks.  Apparently Shutterfly’s asking price is a whopping $ 2 billion, an amount which could dwarf what HP could ask for Snapfish.
