Gupshup Raises $60 Mn to Scale AI Messaging Platform, Eyes IPO in India

Gupshup Raises $60 Mn to Scale AI Messaging Platform, Eyes IPO in India

Conversational AI leader Gupshup has raised over $60 million in a strategic mix of equity and debt funding, backed by Globespan Capital Partners and EvolutionX Debt Capital. The fresh capital will fuel Gupshup’s expansion across emerging markets and accelerate its push into enterprise-grade AI messaging solutions.

AI agents are transitioning from experimental tech to business-critical infrastructure,” said Beerud Sheth, Founder and CEO of Gupshup. This funding positions us to capture that global opportunity.

Expansion Strategy

The company plans to deploy the funds to:
  • Scale its AI-driven messaging platform
  • Accelerate go-to-market execution in India, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa
  • Deepen product innovation and enterprise adoption
Gupshup currently powers over 120 billion messages annually for 50,000+ businesses across 130 countries, with India contributing nearly 60% of its revenue. Its platform supports AI agents for marketing, commerce, and customer support, integrated across WhatsApp, voice, mobile apps, and websites.

Operational Streamlining

The company has also undergone significant restructuring, reducing its workforce from 1,500 to around 1,000 over the past two years. The move reflects a shift toward profitable growth, aligning with investor expectations and long-term sustainability.

IPO Ambitions

Gupshup is exploring a domicile shift to India ahead of a potential IPO within 18–24 months, citing strategic alignment with WhatsApp’s dominance in the region and stronger resonance with Indian investors.

"We’re evaluating a local listing to better align with our market footprint and simplify our growth narrative,” Sheth added.

Market Recognition

Gupshup was recently named Meta’s Partner of the Year, underscoring its deep integration with WhatsApp and its growing influence in conversational commerce.

Founded in 2004, Gupshup has evolved from an SMS-based platform into a global leader in conversational AI. Its enterprise-grade tools now span campaign automation, agent assistance, and AI-powered customer engagement.

India's CCI Slaps META with Penalty of $25.4 Mn Over WhatsApp

India's CCI Slaps META with Penalty of $25.4 Mn Over WhatsApp

India's chief competition regulator, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 213.14 crore (approx US$ 25.4 Mn) on Meta (formerly Facebook) for anti-competitive practices related to its 2021 privacy policy update for WhatsApp.

The CCI found that Meta holds a dominant position in both the OTT messaging apps and online display advertising markets in India.

The 2021 privacy policy update forced users to accept expanded data collection and sharing terms without an opt-out option, which the CCI deemed as imposing unfair conditions.

Meta is prohibited from sharing user data collected on WhatsApp with other Meta companies for advertising purposes for the next five years. WhatsApp must provide users with an opt-out option for data sharing and ensure that future policy updates comply with these requirements.

Meta and WhatsApp are required to implement specific behavioral changes within a set timeframe to address the issues arising from the policy update.

Further, as regards sharing of data between Meta companies, the Commission has concluded that (a) sharing of WhatsApp users’ data between Meta companies for purposes other than providing WhatsApp Service creates an entry barrier for the rivals of Meta and thus, results in denial of market access in the display advertisement market, in contravention of the provisions of Section 4(2)(c) of the Act; and (b) Meta has engaged in leveraging its dominant position in the OTT messaging apps through smartphones to protect its position in the online display advertising market and the same is in contravention of Section 4(2)(e) of the Act.

In view of the anti-competitive harm elaborated in this order and for the purpose of addressing such harm, the OPs are further directed to implement the following directions:
  • WhatsApp will not share user data collected on its platform with other Meta Companies or Meta Company Products for advertising purposes, for a period of 5 (five) years from the date of receipt of this order. After expiry of the said period, the directions at para 6.2 (except para 6.2.1) will apply mutatis mutandis in respect of such sharing of data for advertising purposes.
  • With respect to sharing of WhatsApp user data for purposes other than advertising:WhatsApp’s policy should include a detailed explanation of the user data shared with other Meta Companies or Meta Company Products. This explanation should specify the purpose of data sharing, linking each type of data to its corresponding purpose.
    • Sharing of user data collected on WhatsApp with other Meta Companies or Meta Company Products for purposes other than for providing WhatsApp services shall not be made a condition for users to access WhatsApp Service in India.
    • In respect of sharing of WhatsApp user data for purposes other than for providing WhatsApp Services, all users in India (including users who have accepted 2021 update) will be provided with:
  • the choice to manage such data sharing by way of an opt-out option prominently through an in-app notification; and
  • the option to review and modify their choice with respect to such sharing of data through a prominent tab in settings of WhatsApp application.
  • All future policy updates shall also comply with these requirements.
This decision underscores the importance of user consent and fair competition in the digital economy. It also aligns with global trends of increasing scrutiny over data privacy and antitrust practices.

Telegram Launches in-app Browser and Mini App Store Making Web3 Available to Almost a Billion Users

Telegram Launches in-app Browser and Mini App Store Making Web3 Available to Almost a Billion Users

Messaging app Telegram has announced a new in-app browser that supports multiple tabs, making Web3 available to almost a billion users, a Mini App Store, a new kind of mini apps, the ability to gift Stars to friends — and much more.

Telegram Browser

Telegram Browser

Pages you open with the in-app browser can now be collapsed and reopened from the bottom bar, allowing you to freely move between your messages and websites, instant view articles, and mini apps.

Telegram's browser supports decentralized websites hosted on TON — in all mobile and native desktop apps. This makes Web3 immediately available to our almost one billion monthly users.

Now, when you receive a notification while reading an article, viewing a web page, or playing a game, you can check your messages — and go back without losing your progress. You can also add bookmarks to return to a page later.

Developers can learn more about decentralized TON Sites by visiting ton.org — or opening getting-started.ton in the latest version of Telegram.

Mini App Store

More than 500 million out of Telegram's 950 million users interact with mini apps every month.

Mini App Store

We've added a new 'Apps' tab in Search which shows a list of apps you use and a list of popular mini apps. Now you can quickly access all your games and services — or find something new.

Developers can now upload video demos and screenshots for their mini app previews to let users know what to expect.

Mini apps that utilize Telegram Stars now have a chance to be shown in the 'Popular Apps' section. Developers can learn more about mini apps on this page.

Sharing from Mini Apps to Stories

Mini apps can now generate custom story content — like AI-generated videos, achievements, or snapshots of leaderboards — for users to share as a Telegram Story right from the mini app. This enables new kinds of apps — and helps existing ones spread among their users' contacts.

Developers can go here for more details about adding this feature to their mini apps.

Gifting Stars to Friends

Telegram Stars let you buy digtal goods in mini apps or access paid content in channels. With this update, you can buy stars as a gift for your contacts.

To gift stars, go to Settings > My Stars (on iOS, you will currently see this menu only if you have previously purchased stars for yourself).

Users celebrating their birthday will appear at the top of the list in a special section. Gifted stars will show up in the chat as a beautiful animated gift box.
Flash when Recording Video Messages

Video messages now let you use the front flash to brighten your screen with extra light when recording in the dark.

Tap the microphone icon in the message bar to switch to video recording. Then press and hold the camera icon to record your video message. Swipe up to keep recording and tap the flash icon in the bottom left corner.
Weather Widget in Stories

Users can now share the weather in their stories by adding an animated widget to everything from sunny selfies to ski slopes.
Story Covers

When posting a video story to your profile, you can choose which frame will be used as the cover photo.

Browser and Mini App Tabs on MacOS

Before you go, check out how gorgeous the new browser on Telegram for macOS is. Its new tabs support everything: games, mini apps, instant view pages and even Web3 ton-sites.

Telegram to Launch Its Own Mini App Store and In-App Browser

Telegram to Launch Its Own Mini App Store and In-App Browser

Telegram, the popular messaging app, is making some exciting moves. Founder Pavel Durov recently announced that Telegram will launch an in-app browser and a mini app store by the end of July 2024.

Recently, Telegram announced that its active user base has surged to 950 million, and they aim to cross the 1 billion mark this year. The growth in users comes amid an explosion in blockchain-based games, such as NotCoin, that users tap to play on Telegram.

The upcoming app store within Telegram will allow users to discover and access mini apps directly from the platform. The mini app store will host lightweight applications within Telegram. These mini apps can offer various functionalities, including games, tools, and services.

The app store will also have web3 support, aligning with Telegram's commitment to blockchain and cryptocurrency. This move comes after the company's initial coin offering (ICO) in 2018 faced challenges. Now, Telegram is actively promoting web3 technology on its platform.

The in-app browser will allow users to view web content directly within Telegram, streamlining their experience. No need to switch between apps.

According to Pavel Durov, CEO and Founder of Telegram, "To keep the fire going, this month, we will introduce a mini app store and an in-app browser with support for Web3-Pages. "

Telegram acknowledges the issue of scams and is taking steps to address it. The messaging app plans to display the month of registration and principal country for public accounts, similar to Instagram. Additionally, organizations can use mini apps to issue labels for channels, creating a decentralized marketplace for third-party verification.

Back in 2022, Durov had said that Telegram aims to develop decentralized tools, including non-custodial wallets and decentralized exchanges, to securely facilitate cryptocurrency transactions for millions,

Telegram is continuously evolving. In early of this month Telegram launched series of new features and updates, including "Minimized Mini Apps" feature wherein users can minimize mini apps for smoother multitasking. This feature enhances the overall user experience by allowing seamless transitions between different tasks within the app. "Telegram Stars" enables users to purchase digital goods and reward creators through paid posts. It's a way to support content creators and engage with their work.

Hashtag and Location Search in Stories also launched recently. Content discovery gets a boost with hashtag and location search functionality in Telegram Stories. Users can explore relevant content more easily. A new "customizable link widget" improves link visibility within stories. This feature allows creators to share links effectively with their audience.

Atlassian to Acquire Loom to Supercharge Team Collaboration

Atlassian to Acquire Loom to Supercharge Team Collaboration

Atlassian Corporation (NASDAQ: TEAM), a leading provider of team collaboration and productivity software, today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Loom, the video messaging platform that has amassed more than 25 million users and was named among the top 50 of Fast Company’s World’s Most Innovative companies in 2023.

The global movement towards distributed work has fueled a need for new ways to help teams collaborate when they are not in the same location or even the same hemisphere. Asynchronous (async) video has been at the forefront of this movement with Loom’s business users recording almost 5 million videos per month.

Async video is the next evolution of team collaboration, and teaming up with Loom helps distributed teams communicate in deeply human ways,” said Mike Cannon-Brookes, co-founder and co-CEO of Atlassian.

Atlassian has deep expertise in how teams work. It's already the go-to place for over 260,000 customers who plan, track and get work done, and the addition of Loom will further elevate the collaboration experience for teams. Soon, engineers will be able to visually log issues in Jira; leaders can use videos to connect with employees at scale; sales teams can send tailored video updates to clients and HR teams can onboard new employees with personalized welcome videos.

Furthermore, by integrating Atlassian’s and Loom’s investments in AI, customers will be able to seamlessly transition between video, video transcripts, summaries, documents, and the workflows developed from them, providing multiple ways for teams to connect and collaborate.

For Loom customers, the acquisition will bring the benefit of Atlassian’s platform and portfolio of products, allowing users to plug async video directly into key workflows in Jira and systems of record in Confluence.

Loom’s vision is to empower everyone at work to communicate more effectively wherever they are, and by joining Atlassian, we can accelerate their mission to unleash the potential of every team,” said Joe Thomas, co-founder and CEO of Loom. “We’re excited to weave video into collaboration in a way that only Loom + Atlassian can.”

Details Regarding the Transaction

Under the terms of the definitive agreement, Atlassian will acquire Loom for approximately $975 million, inclusive of Loom’s cash balance, subject to customary adjustments. Total consideration will be comprised of approximately $880 million in cash, and the remainder in Atlassian equity awards, subject to continued vesting provisions.

Atlassian expects to fund the cash consideration through existing cash balances and the transaction is not expected to have an impact on the company’s share repurchase strategy.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of Atlassian’s fiscal year 2024, subject to customary closing conditions and required regulatory approval.

The acquisition is expected to be slightly dilutive to non-GAAP operating margins in fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

Loom Background

Founded in 2016, Loom is a video messaging platform that helps users communicate through instantly shareable videos. Known for their ease of use, users simultaneously record their desktop screen, camera, and microphone creating rich documentation of institutional knowledge. With transcripts in 50+ languages and AI features that write titles, summaries, chapters, and tasks, Loom videos become important company know-how to be shared, reused, and self-served across teams.

Sharing many similarities with Atlassian’s mission, product-led go-to-market motion, and culture, today Loom serves over 200,000 customers.

4 Best Apps that Let You Chat and Kill Your Boredom

Gone are the days when you lost a cent at every text you sent. And even then, you were not sure if it went through. Those days seem like the Stone Age now.

Mobile apps are the masterstroke of technology, changing lives forever. They have made instant yakking as easy as pie, either through text, videos, images, voice notes, or combined methods. Consequently, more people bump into lamp posts and each other than ever before!

Even though other app genres are also gaining popularity, chat apps never cease to amaze us.

Before you cave into a gnawing sense of boredom at the dentist or a bus station, grab your phone and talk to your friends. Check out what they’re doing right now or share your current feelings with them. A random banter could help release stress and alleviate your mood.

Messaging Apps – A Statistical Insight

Chances are your phone has already beeped a couple of times since you began reading this blog. The integration of social media with chat options makes it easier to converse with your friends, family, and colleagues.

According to a Facebook survey on messaging app use, over half of the participants preferred to message a brand on their messaging apps rather than calling.

Apart from the corporate sector, chat apps are a blessing for ordinary conversations too. Statista reveals that by Q4 of 2019, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger were the most popular messaging apps globally. They held 1.6 billion and 1.3 billion users, respectively.

It makes sense to say that we are living in an era of hyper-communication. Statista discovered how 41 million messages are sent out every minute. Moreover, The Wall Street Journal predicts the average revenue generated per user will be more than $15 by 2020.

It’s no wonder messaging apps are growing at such a rapid pace. Now is the best time to dive into the developers’ world. There are particular platforms like AppMakr, making it simpler to develop mobile apps.

4 Chat Apps to Bust Your Boredom

In this post, we explore the best chat apps available in stores. Let’s go!

1. Whatsapp

Whatsapp is a voice and text messaging app that surfaced in 2009. Due to its features and functionality, the app has gained massive popularity since. Part of what makes this app appealing is its operability on different phones and desktop.

The app has continuously added new elements to its toolkits like stickers, emojis, and fully encrypted messages between users. From its inception, Whatsapp has been free of charge. It uses your phone’s 2G, 3G, 4G, Edge, or Wi-fi connection instead of your plan’s message plan.

Choose Whatsapp when:
    1. You want to connect with a large group
    2. You have special someone whom you love to talk to
    3. You’re a fan of group chats but don’t want them to disturb you
WhatsApp stated it serves more than 2 billion people in over 180 countries, having over 500 million daily active users. As per the Market Intelligence Report, WhatsApp is gaining popularity compared with its competitors. It’s even edging out its Facebook sibling, Messenger.

2. Facebook Messenger

Facebook isn’t only the largest social platform. It is also the second biggest messaging app in terms of monthly active users.

You can share photos, videos, text and become a part of a larger group as well. It automatically allows you to populate your contact list. However, you can permit someone to add you as a contact by scanning a unique code. There is no device limit – you can make calls from your phone app to someone using Messenger on desktop.

Choose Facebook Messenger when:
  1. You want to share flight details, recipes, news updates, or other details
  2. You love cool new tech
  3. You’re looking for a fun yet reliable way to connect with friends
  4. You want to host up to 50 people
Statista anticipates the number of users on Facebook Messenger to reach 2.48 billion by 2021. It also discovered that 1.3 billion people use Facebook Messenger every month – this makes 11% of the World Population!

3. airG – Meet New Friends

It is always exciting to get in touch with new people across the globe. It broadens your horizons and perks up your social circle.

airG – Meet New Friends allows you to expand your network by meeting people who share the same passion and interest as you. You can flirt, chat, or discuss serious issues. With over 100 million members worldwide, there is always someone to talk to.

Choose airG when:
  1. You want to empower your perceptions
  2. You want to avoid ads associated with other platforms
  3. You like sending high-quality images
  4. You’re crazy about cool emoticons
With constant updates and bug fixtures, airG Spam-free apps provide an uninterrupted experience for the users. Their chat app allows you to connect with strangers when you input preferable age, location, or other details.

4. Snapchat

Snapchat provides a rich platform to share moments with your family and friends. What makes this app different from the others is that you can send multimedia snippets from your day-to-day lives. These snaps do not stay for more than 24 hours.

You can share photos and videos with a particular recipient or with a selected group of followers. But the most appreciated feature of this app is the filters. Even celebrities have showcased hilarious videos with these filters. You can make your face look like an alien, wear a silly outfit, or make a puppy-dog face.

Choose Snapchat when:
  1. You’re a corporate entity and want to market your brand through filters
  2. You want to send personalized Bitmoji avatars
  3. You want to share chunks from your life with friends, family, colleagues, or customers
Hootsuite reported in June 2020 that 238 million people were using Snapchat every day. And as per Statista, it is the world’s 13th most popular social media platform, having 397 active monthly users. Perhaps the bite-sized communication and security are the reasons behind its success.

Ending Remarks

There is something extraordinary about all apps listed above. Your choice of a chat app must rely on your requirements. We also recommend you to scan more messaging apps in stores. Maybe you’ll find something that hits all the right chords for you!
