How Smart Energy Monitors Could Save You Money On Electricity Bills

Business Wire India
Consumers have little visibility into their day-to-day electricity consumption and how using various appliances can influence their bills. The bill shows consumers total energy usage for the statement period and overall totals for the year. It doesn’t pinpoint how and where of energy consumption.

Smart energy monitors offer real-time information of home or office power consumption on a user's mobile app and track usage trends that can help users consume less energy and save on their electricity bill. Studies have found that users save 15 - 20% on their power bills and significantly reduce their carbon footprint.

Some key features to consider when selecting the best home energy monitor are that they provide energy details of the entire home or office, can provide appliance-specific information, have an easy-to-use app, and offer easy installation. Some monitors also provide “solar net metering”, a useful feature for places with solar installations

For a detailed account of energy use throughout the home or office, consider a whole-house power monitor, which has sensors that connect to the home’s electrical panel or meter. The energy monitor tracks the performance and power consumption of each appliance based on its connection to an individual circuit. The sensors gather information, and the monitor analyzes the data and transmits insights or notifications to the user's phone. When linked to Wi-Fi, home energy monitors provide details on energy use in kilowatts and cost in rupees in real time.

There are many such devices available that offer such features. A popular one is the Emporia Vue manufactured by the US-based Emporia Energy Corp. The latest Emporia Vue Gen 2 version was recently launched in India in partnership with Genconnect Marketing Services LLP. The product is currently available through their website www.indem.in and Amazon India.

Energy Efficient Smart Screens from Discarded Groundnut Shells

Representative

Indian scientists have developed an eco-friendly smart screen from groundnut shells that could help not only in preserving privacy but also in energy conservation by controlling light and heat passing through it and reducing air conditioning load.

A group of researchers led by Prof. S. Krishna Prasad, along with Dr Shankar Rao of the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bangalore, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India has made major headway in developing such a cellulose-based smart screen from discarded ground nutshells.

In the smart screen application, liquid crystal molecules were confined in a polymer matrix. The matrix was built using cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) which were prepared from discarded groundnut shells by Prof. Yuvraj Singh Negi’s team at IIT Roorkee. The refractiveindex of the liquid crystal molecules along a particular direction were altered by the application of an electric field. In the absence of the electric field, there was a mismatch between refractive indices between those of the polymer and the liquid crystal, leading to the scattering of light.

Upon application of a few volts of an electric field, the liquid crystal molecules underwent a direction change resulting in the matching of refractive indices, and the device became transparent almost instantaneously. When the field was turned off, the system quickly recovered the scattering state. This reversible change between the two states available at the flip of a switch occurred over thousands of cycles, with essentially no change in contrast or switching speed.

The device they developed, described in a recent issue of Applied Physics Letters, employed the same principle that causes fog on winter mornings. This happens only when the water droplets are of right size, and it can co-exist along with air. The incoming light sees these two as materials of different refractive indices and thus gets scattered, giving a foggy appearance. Similarly, the polymer and the liquid crystal should co-exist in the right size to create the required optical properties for the smart screen.

Ms Pragnya and Dr Srividhya, the students who worked on the device, emphasize that the protocol for the CNC preparation plays a key role in controlling the device contrast with the IIT Roorkee material outperforming the CNC available from commercial sources.

The scientists said that while, in principal, the device could be developed from any cellulose or agricultural waste, due to certain properties of groundnut waste, the smart screen developed from groundnut waste has been found to be most efficient.

Apart from the original intention of targeted privacy creation, the device can be employed for a whole range of possible applications, especially in energy conservation by controlling the amount and window of infrared light that is permitted to pass. For example, while a window having this technology would remain transparent to the entire visible region, undesirable levels of heat radiation could be significantly reduced, keeping the enclosure cool.

BETiC, IIT-Bombay Innovator Built Smart OPD Booth to Protect Doctors while Screening COVID-19 Patients

Doctors who come in contact with COVID-19 patients are at the highest risk of infection with the virus. Personal protective equipment (PPE) including face masks, face shields and full body gowns help them in preventing the infection. The doctors are required to wear a fresh PPE for their shift and discard them afterward. Given the large number of PPE required, it is not surprising that these are in short supply.

At the beginning of the pandemic, some doctors were reported to be using helmets as face masks to protect themselves while screening COVID-19 patients. Subsequent reports mentioned that the Indian Government had ordered 15 million PPE kits including face masks and gowns from China. The apparel industry also chipped in and declared that they were gearing up to start local production of PPE kits.

The shortage of PPE has resulted in the tragic death of many doctors and nursing staff taking care of COVID-19 patients. Going by the trends in the USA, UK and other countries where several hundred doctors and care-givers lost their lives to the pandemic, this has become a great cause for concern. With the rising rate of infections and death in India in spite of lock-down that entered the third phase on 3rd March, there is greater urgency for solutions to protect the healthcare professionals, especially who are screening COVID patients.

Ayu Devices, a start-up from BETIC (Biomedical Engineering and Technology Innovation Centre) of IIT Bombay responded to the challenge by developing a smart COVID OPD (Out Patient Department) booth. It contains two air-conditioned chambers – one for the doctor and one for the patient with a glass barrier in between, and a two-way communication system. The doctor checks the patient using a smart stethoscope developed by the start-up, which allows listening, recording and transmitting chest sounds over wireless networks without touching the patient.

The booth also contains a temperature gun, pulse oximeter and swab-taking provision for screening the patients. Contactless automatic sanitizer disposing machines are placed outside the separate entrances for doctors and patients. The smart OPD booth is also equipped with a disinfection system to sanitize the room after every patient has been screened, to prevent cross-contamination between patients.

Adarsha K, CEO Ayu Devices elaborates --

It was Dr Rangnath Jhawar, who identified the need for a smart, safe and portable booth to screen and diagnose Covid-19 patients. The booth was designed by Dr. Rangnath Jhawar, Dr. Durwesh Kadri and Mr. Shrishail Hamine, of Krea Design Solutions. They shared the concept with Sevak Trust, an NGO, who stepped forward under the guidance of Dr. Vidya Mane, Medical Superintendent of HBT Trauma Care Municipal Hospital. The team deployed the first Smart COVID OPD booth at the same hospital, and is continuously improving, manufacturing and deploying similar booths in other hospitals.

In addition to the HBT Trauma Care Municipal Hospital, the Smart COVID OPD booth is now deployed at many other hospitals across the city including Cama Hospital, Sion Hospital, JJ Hospital, St. George's and Rajawadi Hospital. Many donors such as Money Life Foundation have pitched in to support this initiative. The fact that Ayu Devices is already a trusted name in the diagnostics space, improved the acceptance of the smart OPD.

More than 1000 smart stethoscopes of Ayu Devices are in use across the country, many of them in primary health centres in rural areas and telemedicine firms. Many doctors are checking COVID-19 patients using the stethoscope since it transmits data from the stethoscope to a mobile or laptop via Bluetooth. The data can be shared with other doctors for analysis, thereby distributing the workload.

“The smart OPD booth is an excellent example of multi-disciplinary collaboration and all-round cooperation in this period of crisis. The booth increases the efficiency of screening COVID-19 patients while minimizing the risk of infection to doctors. It can also be deployed in shopping malls, housing societies, offices and schools to halt the spread of this pandemic.” adds Dr Rupesh Ghyar, SEO of BETIC, who mentored Adarsha and his team.

Team members of Ayu Devices include Adarsha K, Ninad Kambli, Shashank Chaurasia, Srikant Mishra, Amey Haldankar, Hassan Kumar Gundu and Vishesh Sinha.

The smart stethoscope module called AyuLynk converts conventional stethoscopes into digital stethoscopes, and allows wireless transmission. It was invented at BETIC, IIT Bombay in 2016 by Adarsha K, who gave up a cushy job in Larsen & Toubro to incubate his start-up company Ayu Devices in 2017.

How Are Smartwatches Leading the Smart Wearables Revolution Around the Globe

Technology has evolved leaps and bounds to engulf our lives for the better. Lively innovations in the smart wearable segment have made it into one of the biggest industries in the world. The demand for smart wearable technology is on an upward trend as these devices are steadily becoming a necessity for the general public.

Studies conducted by Stastica are a testament to the increasing numbers of smart wearable users. These numbers will continue to rise as new modifications improve our smart wearable experience.

Advancements in research have been leading to increased innovation in the recent years and have been instrumental in driving the demand for the wearable market and led to new product categories like the smart fabrics and hearable, among others.

Investments by the likes of ICT Fund to propel Asian smart wearable brands like KaHa have come as a huge boost for the industry in Asia.

Smartwatches constitute a major portion of smart wearable sales and are crucial to the growth of this industry. Before getting in depth about the smartwatch analysis, let's talk about some other smart wearables in the market that have been making waves.

Different types of smart wearables in the market in 2019:

  • WEARABLES FOR ASSAULT PROTECTION:

With a spike in the numbers of rape cases and assaults across the nation, it was only logical for manufacturers to come up with wearables that protect you against such untoward incidents.  Such a wearable is simply a gadget that is camouflaged as an attachment to the garment and made to detect falls and force. These wearables connect with your smartphones via Bluetooth and are capable of sending emergency texts or alarms as distress communications to your loved ones. Some of these are even capable of recording evidence for further legal actions against the accused.

  • SMART RINGS:

Smart rings might seem like devices straight out of a sci-fi movie of the 20th century. These tiny wearables went viral for all the right reasons when they were first launched. These are especially popular among businessmen and individuals who spend most of their time in meetings and want to get notifications without attracting much attention. Smart rings are perfect for people who like to keep their wrists free.

  • FITNESS TRACKERS:

A must for every fitness enthusiast in the modern era, fitness trackers are the second most popular and widely sold smart wearable devices behind smartwatches. Rising health issues due to sedentary lifestyle have attributed to the popularity of these devices. Another great selling factor of fitness trackers is their low cost and capability of capturing health data on a wider scope than big medical equipment.

  • MEDICAL WEARABLES:

There is an increasing demand in the use of medical wearables owing to its affordability and convenience as opposed to routine check-ups that not only comes at a cost but also expensive. The latest advancement has seen these devices now capable of collecting highly accurate health data and connect remotely to the personal physician who will then be able to monitor your health progress and also check if you are correctly using your medications. Medical wearables include the likes of Google smart lenses, health patch MD, Cloud DX vitality and iTBra.

Why are smartwatches leading the bandwagon?

Not all of us like to have a screen strapped on our wrists, but who does not like the convenience of tracking workouts and responding to notifications without reaching for a phone?

Smartwatches are fantastic tools to enhance our comfort and elevate our interactivity with technology.

Owing to the increasing penetration rates of urbanization, the demand for aesthetically appealing advanced featured products with the ability to better serve the consumers' daily requirements, such as time schedules, has driven the market for smartwatches, globally.

In addition, the ongoing technological advancements by the companies are the primary factors stimulating the growth of smartwatches, as it is a completely technical product that requires constant research and development for differentiated features. Today the smartwatches supports various types of gaming, you can even play casino in india, don’t be surprised if James Bond makes a few bets at online roulette from his wrist...

Smartwatches are multi-functional as they do so much more than just check the time. Smartwatches can work as fitness tracking devices, enable you to attend to calls, make payments through NFC, etc.

Great smartwatches to opt for:

There are tons of smartwatches from different manufacturers in the market right now. This could make it tricky for a layman to choose the best of the lot. To ease your burden, we have compiled a few smartwatches that tick most, if not all the right boxes.

  • SAMSUNG GALAXY WATCH ACTIVE:

The latest wearable from Samsung's stable, the galaxy watch active is a much lighter and compact improvement over its predecessors. Samsung has already established itself as a leading smartphone manufacturer and compliments its phones well with its smartwatch line up. The galaxy watch active boasts of a 1.1-inch circular Super AMOLED screen, an Exynos 9110 processor, 4GB of internal storage, and a 230mAh battery. It houses plenty of sensors and wireless features, including Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi, NFC for Samsung Pay, GPS, a heart rate sensor, and an ambient light sensor. It is also fairly inexpensive than many major direct competitors.

  • APPLE WATCH SERIES 4:

The Apple watch series has an iconic status in the smartwatch segment. Although limited to iOS devices only, this line up of watches by Apple has seen sales in millions over the world. The Series 4 promises an unmatched seamless experience with iPhones and packs in two size options with a variety of colour options. It features a square1.78″ LTPO OLED display, Apple S4 chipset and 16 GB storage. It also has all the bells and whistles that you would expect from a high-end smartwatch but takes it up a notch with its ECG rated best in class heart monitor.

  • TICWATCH PRO

Although a lesser-known name in the smartwatch market, the Ticwatch pro is the smartwatch for you if you want the best of both worlds - Android and iOS. This smartwatch comes with the WearOS and has two displays, one layered on top of the other. On the top is a transparent LCD display that can display the time, your heart rate and more when the battery is low.

Below that is a bright and bold OLED that will give you all of the benefits of Wear OS.

Conclusion/ CTA:

The Asian markets are especially flooded with competitively priced smart wearables spanning many platforms.

Smart wearables are not just mere luxury accessories anymore. They have taken a much more important role of supplementing our smartphones for a better, more intuitive connectivity.

As technology advances leaps and bounds, the smart wearable industry will see tremendous growth led by smartwatches.

Former Indian national cricket team captain Anil Kumble founded technology startup, Spektacom Technologies, and Microsoft Corp have announced the introduction of the ‘Power Bat’, which provides players, coaches, commentators, fans and viewers with a new and unique way to engage with the sport and help improve their game — all powered by the Microsoft Azure cloud platform using AI and Internet of Things (IoT) services.

Microsoft has been working closely with Anil Kumble, who is an engineer by education, and his startup Spektacom to incubate and launch the product, as part of its ScaleUp program.

The 'Power Bat' carries a tiny sticker-chip, the size of a credit card and weighing less than 5 grams. The data from the sticker-chip will be fed into a stump box, and captured and processed using Microsoft’s Azure Sphere to be available to the broadcaster of the match real time and for the player to mull over later.

The data will help analyse shots and break them into measurable parameters such as quality (of the shot), swing (of the bat), power, and twist. It will help batsmen, to give an example, find out how often they hit the ball from the “sweet spot”.

Kumble’s start-up Spektacom Technologies has already experimented with the concept in the Tamil Nadu Premier League on a limited basis and is now ready to scale up through broadcast partner Star Sports.

The quality of the shot is calculated in percentages, the speed of bat in kmph, the power in specs while the twist happens in degrees. In a live demonstration of the bat’s abilities at a Star Sports studio in Mumbai on Thursday, data from a shot showed up on screens in a few seconds.

While the broadcaster would have access to this sticker initially for their commentators to then analyse a batsman during a match, the technology would later be available commercially for anyone to buy the sticker, download an app and access their data. Kumble added that the gadget—which charges in 90 minutes and lasts two days on it—would be affordable.

Star India, the leading cricket broadcaster in India, has used the technology successfully in recent series to provide real-time statistics and insights straight off the oval.

“We’re excited to be a part of the work Spektacom and Star India are doing to enhance the cricket experience for fans, players and coaches. We’ve already seen the impact that connected devices have had in other industries, and we believe that with the advancements in our AI and cloud services, this is just the beginning of what’s possible for not only cricket, but all sports,” said Peggy Johnson, Executive Vice President, Microsoft.

Sanjay Gupta, Managing Director, Star India, said, “Star India has always strived to redefine and elevate experiences for sports fans. From Multi-language feeds and Select Dugout to VR and Watch n’ Play, the coverage of Vivo IPL demonstrates our commitment toward creating new benchmarks in how technology is deployed to deepen fan engagement. The Power Bat promises to be another step in the same direction, and we look forward to the partnership with Anil Kumble (Spektacom) and Microsoft in bringing it to our broadcasts.”

Kumble commented, “Our vision is to bring sports closer to fans through interesting ways of engagement using real-time sports analytics. At the same time, it is important that the technologies used are seamless and do not disrupt the game or obstruct the players. With Microsoft, we have been able to create a secure and effective solution, and with Star India, we have a partner that can stimulate and excite fan engagement.”

The Power Bat is a unique concept whereby a lightweight, Azure Sphere-powered sticker is stuck on the shoulder of the bat — a form factor that is completely unobtrusive. In a live match, as soon as the batsman hits the ball, data on different parameters (speed on impact, twist on impact and quality of the shot — percentage proximity of the ball’s contact to the sweet spot of the willow) are captured in a new unit of measurement titled Power Speks. Microsoft’s Azure Sphere ensures that the data is securely captured and processed. Using advanced analytics and AI services on Azure, real-time insights are captured through the stump box and displayed via the broadcaster. During practice or coaching, the same data can be viewed through a mobile app.

Although the technology introduced by Spektacom has its first use case in cricket, for Microsoft, Anil Kumble and Star India, this is the first of many sports where it can be used. Microsoft believes in leveraging its technology and its people to help sports teams and organisations solve their toughest challenges. By leveraging the company’s intelligent cloud and productivity solutions, sports organisations worldwide are connecting with fans, optimising team and player performance, and managing their operations in new, innovative ways.
