The Wimbledon Championships, commonly known simply as Wimbledon, is starting from 1st July. The oldest tennis tournament in the world is regarded by many as the most prestigious. The upcoming Wimbledon 2024 will be played over 14 days, starting from Monday, July 1, and concluding on Sunday, July 14. The schedule includes Gentlemen's and Ladies' Singles matches in the initial days, followed by Doubles and Mixed Doubles events.

This year, IBM and The All England Lawn Tennis Club have introduced a fascinating new feature for the Wimbledon digital experience: "Catch Me Up." This innovative tool leverages match data with generative AI from IBM's AI and data platform, watsonx, to keep fans updated on the world's leading players as they progress through The Championships. Here's how it works:
  • Personalized Player Cards: The "Catch Me Up" feature displays pre and post-match player cards on wimbledon.com and the Wimbledon 2024 App. These cards are tailored based on user preferences and data, including location and myWimbledon profile. They start with users' favorite players.
  • Pre-Match Insights: Before matches, the feature provides analysis of recent player performance and likelihood-to-win predictions.
  • Post-Match Highlights: After matches, the player cards include key statistics and highlights.
Additionally, "Catch Me Up" creates longer-form daily summaries of play, enhancing the overall fan experience.

The announcement comes as new research from IBM and Morning Consult reveals that 55% of global tennis fans surveyed think AI will have a positive impact on sports. When considering how generative AI could improve their experience, these respondents prioritised real-time updates (36%), personalised content (31%), and unique insights (30%).

Approximately one-third (31%) of global tennis fans surveyed use multiple devices while watching sporting events, primarily to get more information, watch multiple matches at the same time, and interact with other fans. In addition, nearly half (47%) of them engage with additional content on tennis daily or weekly and rank summarisation and personalisation as the two most important features of sports content.

The underlying technology behind this feature is IBM's Granite Large Language Model (LLM), which generates AI-driven text using the capabilities of the watsonx platform. It has been trained on the Wimbledon editorial style and will be monitored by the All England Club.

This year, Wimbledon is also expanding its coverage using generative AI to include a broader range of matches, including wheelchair events, to cater to its diverse international audience. The redesigned digital match center, known as IBM Slamtracker, will offer bullet point-based match previews and post-match reviews for both ladies' and gentlemen's singles matches on the Wimbledon App and wimbledon.com

The Indian IT giant has partnered with the French Tennis Federation to introduce several AI-first innovations, marking a significant evolution in their sixth year of collaboration. These innovations are set to enhance the digital experience for fans, players, coaches, and the media alike.

Leveraging Infosys Topaz, an AI-first set of services, solutions, and platforms using generative AI technologies, the new feature set will enhance the RG digital experience for fans, players, coaches, and the media. Beyond the set of existing innovations such as AI Assisted Journalism, AI Videos, and Match Centre, the following new experiences are slated to be launched this year.

Some of the key features introduced by Infosys include:
  • RG Gen AI Poster Challenge – The RG Gen AI Poster Challenge features on the Roland-Garros digital properties and enables fans to create their artistic renditions of the iconic RG Posters using Generative AI. It brings alive the unique history of RG with modern technology. Fans will also be able to vote for their favorite poster; and winners will be awarded tickets for the RG 2025 edition.
  • AI Bracket Challenge – The AI Bracket Challenge introduces a gamified layer to the Roland-Garros experience, inviting fans to engage in predictive gameplay by forecasting match outcomes throughout the tournament. It also features an AI powered auto predict feature that fans can leverage to help complete their brackets.   • Split Screen Analysis in Players Portal – The enhanced Split Screen Analysis tool in the Players Portal offers a sophisticated analytical platform designed specifically for players and coaches. Junior Leadership Program to empower the next generation of young leaders through immersive digital learning opportunities

Infosys has launched a new initiative for Infosys Springboard with Table Tennis Victoria to nurture young leaders from within the sport.

Founded in 1925, Table Tennis Victoria (TTV) is the State Sporting Organisation for the Sport of Table Tennis in Victoria, Australia.

The Junior Leadership program offers promising young leaders an immersive learning experience to enhance their digital skills and community awareness. Participants will leverage a bespoke version of Infosys Springboard, the company’s digital learning and collaboration platform, to learn important skills such as inclusion, leadership, technology, and design thinking.

The Program's participants will be selected from a cohort of over 700 competitive and recreation players under the age of 18 from both metropolitan and regional Victoria. Participants will spend a day at the Infosys Living Lab in Melbourne, with hands on learning experiences across the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and how these technologies are shaping sports, our communities, and the world.

The program will further engage young people in volunteering and community leadership by supporting participants to deliver a table tennis project, in collaboration with their table tennis club, coach, or community organisation.

The program will not only grow the participants’ skills at an individual level but will also guide and grow Table Tennis Victoria in volunteer recruitment, increased female and junior participation, improved tournament structures, and performance pathways. Table Tennis Victoria will use this program as a foundation to establish a junior advisory committee in line with meeting the child safe standard of empowering young people. The first cohort of junior leaders will participate in the program in April 2024.

Tech Mahindra, a leading provider of digital transformation, consulting and business re-engineering services and solutions, announced it has collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build a sports cloud platform. The offering focuses on building next-generation digital capabilities for sports organisations and delivering immersive and personalised experiences to sporting enthusiasts worldwide. The sports cloud offering is the result of a Strategic Collaboration Agreement (SCA) signed between the two organisations in September, 2023, with a shared vision to bring the sports institutions closer to the fans, and the fans closer to the action. The SCA supports ease of access for Tech Mahindra to AWS resources and services, and allows both entities to participate in joint go-to-market initiatives and drive business growth.

The increasing need for enhanced experience among sports fans, the growing adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) experience for efficient management of sports stadiums, and the growing demand for data-driven insights by sports organisations is expected to fuel the overall growth of sports technology.

Tech Mahindra and AWS will collaborate to offer a comprehensive digital platform to sports organisations, offering use cases related to content and community engagement, customer data management and audience segmentation, and sports analytics, while delivering immersive stadium-to-home fan experiences by leveraging augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/ VR), and metaverse gamification. IIT Madras and Inspire Institute of Sport Creating Low-Cost IoT-powered Boxing Analytics Platform 'Smartboxer'



A team from IIT-Madras has collaborated with Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Vijayanagar in Ballari district of Karnataka, to develop a cost-effective Internet-of-Things powered boxing analytics platform ‘Smartboxer,’ to increase India’s boxing medal tally at the 2024 Olympics.

The SportsTech platform will use wearable sensors & video cameras to assess the performance. It will provide an above-par competitive edge to Indian athletes by providing feedback and performance assessments using the IoT-enabled wearable sensors and video cameras.

IoT-powered devices in Smartboxer include — sensor-embedded gloves to analyze punch force; wireless foot insole with pressure sensor to record ground reaction force; wireless sensors to record a player’s lower body movement and inertial measurement unit to record upper body movement. Boxing ring video cameras will help classify players arm movements.

SAI has shortlisted archery, boxing, shooting, badminton, wrestling, hockey, weightlifting, cycling and athletics to improve medal tally in Olympics 2024.

The team will apply for patent for Smartboxer after IIS validates it.

Ranganathan Srinivasan, head, Centre of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics and adjunct faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras, said, "Smartboxer is one of the many alternatives of IIT Madras aimed towards the Indian government’s ambitious goal of winning more medals in Olympics."

John Warburton, head of Youth Development (Boxing) at IIS, said: “We will be able to highlight to the boxers their strength and areas that require development such as patterns of movement, activity levels, punch and defensive repertoires, technically and tactically.”

Babji Srinivasan, associate professor in the Department of Applied Mechanics at IIT-M, said the system would integrate data and video streams and multiple IoT devices. The information from the data would provide fight analytics that would help not only coaches but also judges quantify the key traits of boxing champions.

SportVot is a hyperlocal sports platform that aims at creating an online channel to stream sports events and help discover sports talent from the grassroots of India while creating a community of sports enthusiasts. India has over 10 million aspiring/emerging athletes (U-19), and around 100k + semi-professional/ professional tournaments occur annually. But most athletes do not get access to the right set of tools and platforms to showcase their talent and engage with the ecosystem. This results in a lack of transparency in talent discovery which in turn increases the number of dropouts in the Indian Sports Ecosystem.

Most of the sports games, other than the premier tier sports tournaments are not live-streamed or telecast across any platform in India. Sports streaming is expensive and complicated. A traditional broadcasting setup involves dependency on external service providers for expensive hardware, multiple complicated software and apps, and a special arrangement for OB vans. This makes the digitization of local games very difficult and hence no visibility to local talent. There is a need for a cost-effective streaming platform that undertakes the needs of teams, franchises, and fans. SportVot not only enables streaming with the least amount of resources but also has a rich layer of tools overlay to edit, analyze, and share the videos across various channels.

With internet penetration, sports viewership is increasing by the day.
