Vodafone Idea May Get $6 Billion Lifeline from US Private Equity Giant TGH

Vodafone Idea May Get $6 Billion Lifeline from US Private Equity Giant TGH

Debt-laden telecom operator Vodafone Idea (Vi)may soon receive a crucial lifeline, with US-based private equity firm Tilman Global Holdings (TGH) reportedly in advanced discussions to invest up to $6 billion in the company.

According to people familiar with the matter, TGH has submitted a detailed proposal to the Indian government that links its investment to a restructuring of Vi’s massive liabilities, including spectrum and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. The package, if approved, could mark one of the largest foreign private equity bets in India’s telecom sector.

A Lifeline for Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea, India’s third-largest telecom operator, has been struggling under a debt burden exceeding ₹2.1 lakh crore. Despite the government converting part of its dues into equity—making it the single largest shareholder with a 33% stake—the company has continued to face liquidity challenges, subscriber losses, and delays in rolling out 5G services.

Industry analysts say a multi-billion-dollar infusion could help Vi accelerate network upgrades, expand 4G coverage, and finally launch 5G services, allowing it to compete more effectively with rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

What TGH Wants

Sources suggest that TGH is not looking for a passive role. The firm is expected to seek significant operational control in exchange for its investment, potentially reshaping Vi’s management and strategic direction.

The proposal reportedly includes:
  • Equity infusion: $4–6 billion
  • Debt restructuring: tied to government approval
  • Operational oversight: to ensure turnaround execution

Strategic Stakes

  • For Vodafone Idea: The deal could be a make-or-break moment, offering the capital needed to stabilize operations and regain market confidence.
  • For TGH: The investment represents a bold bet on India’s fast-growing digital economy and rising data consumption.
  • For the Government: Approving the package would safeguard competition in the telecom sector, but it also raises questions about foreign control in a critical industry.

What’s Next

The government’s response to TGH’s proposal will be decisive. If approved, the deal could be finalized in the coming months, potentially reshaping India’s telecom landscape. If talks collapse, however, Vodafone Idea may be forced to explore alternative funding routes—or risk further erosion of its already fragile market position.

‘Willful Misinterpretation of How Digital Economy Works’: IAMAI on Ill-Conceived Recommendations on Draft Telecom Bill from A Section of The Industry

IAMAI on Ill-Conceived Recommendations on Draft Telecom Bill

The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in a statement on Friday said that it was appalled at the regression and denigration of the discussion around regulating the digital economy. Far from the government’s stated goal of creating a 1 trillion-dollar digital economy, part of the telecom infrastructure industry has sought to reignite discussions that threaten to erase the progress the Indian tech industry has achieved thus far.

Data released by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) shows that India’s digital economy has grown tremendously over the past decade, generating over 200 billion US dollars of economic value each year. Integral to this growth has been the compartmentalisation of legislations regulating carriage and content. By regulating carriage and content separately, India has enabled the growth of both OTT service providers as well as traditional telecommunication service providers. The rapid creation of India’s 100+ unicorns is a testament to this phenomenon. Despite this astronomical growth that has allowed India to leapfrog into becoming a global start-up hub, the recently concluded consultation on the Draft Telecom Bill betrays either a wilful misinterpretation or a fundamental lack of understanding of how the digital economy works.

An Industry body representing the telecom infrastructure sector has championed the creation of revenue -sharing mechanisms for ‘Over the Top’ (OTT) Layer within the ambit of the Draft Telecom Bill. The implications of this move would be as far-ranging as they would be devastating. Creating room for licensing provisions applicable to over-the-top service providers presents an existential threat to India’s start-up ecosystem by creating herculean barriers to entry. Not only would this mean that aspiring Indian start-ups which are still evolving and developing their business and monetisation models will risk massive compliance costs in their infancy, but also would mean that foreign investors bullish on Indian start-ups may experience a chilling effect owing to the drastic policy uncertainty.

Despite this, certain policy experts continue to propagate fantasies about equitable contributions from stakeholders within the OTT layer, which would only seem to strengthen the gatekeeping abilities of the owners of the infrastructural layer on which OTT services operate. These changes would only establish additional sources of revenues for well-established sectors while leaving the start-up ecosystem vulnerable to compliance costs even when they may be pre revenue.

IAMAI, in its letter to the DoT, expressed grave concern about the impact of these changes on India’s start-up ecosystem and the digital economy. IAMAI also sought to illustrate the success of the extant regulatory framework facilitated the creation of 100+ unicorns and 200+ billion dollars of growth, achievements which have enabled India to dream of a 1 trillion-dollar digital economy.

Considering this, IAMAI has recommended that the scope of telecommunication services be reviewed and be limited to only services which distribute spectrum in a utilisable form. The time-tested distinction between telecom spectrum-controlling entities and spectrum-using companies should be maintained as it has been the basis that has allowed innovation and deeper penetration of the internet in India.

4 Myths About Wi-Fi 6 and Why It is the Great Time to Make the Switch to the New Standard

Wi-Fi 6 is here, and devices supporting the new standard are starting to hit store shelves, both off- and online. Wi-Fi 6 promises to bring faster speeds and greater capacity… but there are some skeptics who believe that we aren’t quite ready for Wi-Fi 6 and that its benefits will only be appreciated later rather than sooner.

We disagree. Let's discuss many of the misconceptions about Wi-Fi 6 and why we believe now is a great time to make the switch and start your transition to using the new standard. But first, what exactly is Wi-Fi 6?

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the latest wireless standard, designed to improve the current Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac. Key benefits of Wi-Fi 6 over previous standards like Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) include 4x connected capacity, increased data throughput, and faster speeds, resulting in improved performance. This makes Wi-Fi 6 ideal for supporting smart homes with multiple connected devices, 4K & 8K streaming content, large file downloads & uploads, and gigabit internet speed tiers, giving you a more enjoyable Wi-Fi experience.

Now, let’s discuss some of the common myths that surround Wi-Fi 6:

Myth #1: There aren’t many Wi-Fi 6 devices on the market

Wi-Fi 6 enabled devices are readily available today from laptops on the market using Intel’s 10th-gen chips to the latest and greatest smartphones such as Samsung’s Galaxy S10 & Note 10, and Apple’s iPhone 11. With market movers such as Samsung, Apple, and Intel onboard with Wi-Fi 6, you can expect other industry leaders to recognize the benefits of the latest Wi-Fi technology and launch products with Wi-Fi 6.

Myth #2: Most devices will not work with Wi-Fi 6 routers

Wi-Fi 6 routers are 100% backwards compatible with Wi-Fi 5 and older Wi-Fi devices. While you may not get to experience Wi-Fi 6 from day one, you can make sure that your network is ready for new devices with Wi-Fi 6 sooner than later.

Myth #3: Wi-Fi 6 is blazing fast, but only if you have 50+ devices connected

Like-to-like, Wi-Fi 6 increases the speed for even one device by 40% as compared to Wi-Fi 5. If you get one of the newer laptops built-with Intel’s Gig+ technology, you can instantly double the speeds when matched with the right Wi-Fi 6 router.

Myth #4: There are no advantages of upgrading my router to Wi-Fi 6 right away

If your current router is fairly new, isn’t giving you any issues, and you are happy with it, then it’s certainly best to keep it for now and upgrade when the time is right. If you haven’t upgraded your router in a while, your Wi-Fi is slowing to a crawl, and you keep adding more connected devices, then you may consider a Wi-Fi 6 router to help future proof your home.

Global 5G Connections to Reach 3.2 Billion by 2026; Growing 940% as Network Orchestration Tools Maximise Monetisation

A new study from Juniper Research has found that the total number of 5G connections will reach 3.2 billion by 2026; rising from 310 million in 2021. To maximise the monetisation of this significant growth in connections, it predicts that operators will accelerate investment into standalone 5G networks to best position their services to manage future capacity. Standalone 5G networks leverage next-generation technologies, such as network orchestration tools, to enable operators to monetise data‑intensive use cases, like remote healthcare and mobile gaming.

For more insights, download our free whitepaper: How to Monetise Future 5G Services

Operators Must Monetise Value-added 5G Services

The new study, 5G Monetisation: Business Models, Strategic Recommendations & Market Forecasts 2021-2026, identified automating network orchestration tools as a key priority for operators in monetising their 5G services. These tools allow operators to adapt network conditions based on AI analysis of traffic; providing more bandwidth to connections that need it, and maintaining service performance.

By 2026, the report predicts that the average revenue per 5G smartphone connection will fall to $17 globally, from $29 in 2021; significantly impacting operator revenue. To alleviate this decline, it recommends that operators leverage orchestration tools to retain a network’s highest throughput and lowest latency for connections that require it. By utilising this approach, operators can justify charging a premium to these prioritised connections over other 5G connections, and slow this declining average revenue.

Asia Pacific to Account for 2 Billion Connections by 2026

The report found that over 60% of global 5G connections will be located in the Asia Pacific region by 2026. Network orchestration technologies, alongside mmWave frequencies that enable data-intensive 5G services, will be a key driver in creating an ecosystem in this region that allows mobile subscribers to leverage 5G networks for emerging mobile services, whilst maintaining network performance.

Report co-author Dave Bowie remarked: ‘Operators in China, Japan and South Korea have all implemented lower subscription costs, which have accelerated 5G adoption, thus enabling these subscribers to explore novel services that require 5G connectivity.’
