Tesla has officially scaled back its ambitious plans to produce thousands of Optimus humanoid robots in 2025 due to significant design challenges—especially with the robot's hands.

Optimus, also known as the Tesla Bot, is a general-purpose humanoid robot developed by Tesla. It was first announced at Tesla’s AI Day in August 2021, with a prototype unveiled in 2022.

Designed to perform tasks humans don’t want to do, like factory work, sorting, lifting, and navigating terrain, the Optimus bot is powered by Tesla’s onboard AI brain (based on Autopilot hardware), it learns through simulation-based reinforcement learning. The latest Gen 3 version stands 173 cm tall, weighs 57 kg, and can walk at 5 mph. It has 22 degrees of freedom in each hand, enabling human-like dexterity.

In 2025, Tesla showcased Optimus performing Kung Fu movements—learned entirely through AI, without human programming. The robot demonstrated balance, coordination, and agility, marking a leap in real-time movement control.

Tesla initially planned internal deployment in 2025, with external sales starting in 2026. The projected cost is under $30,000, though skepticism remains about its timeline and mass-market viability.

Vaibhav holds a degree in commerce (B.Com in 1999) from Delhi University and is a qualified Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

From July 1999 to March 2016, he worked at PwC in India and the United States, eventually becoming a senior manager in assurance.

In 2016, he joined SolarCity as its corporate controller. SolarCity was founded by Peter and Lyndon Rive (cousins of SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk), and specialized in selling and installing solar energy generation systems for residential, commercial, and industrial customers. In 2016, Tesla acquired SolarCity in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $2.6 billion.

In February 2017, Taneja transitioned to Tesla when SolarCity was acquired, serving as the assistant corporate controller. By May 2018, he was promoted to corporate controller.

In March 2019, he stepped into the role of chief accounting officer, replacing Dave Morton. In January 2021, he became a director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited.

Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), recently addressed the delays surrounding Tesla's entry into the Indian market. In an interaction with CNBC-TV18, Singh stated, "We are the wrong person to be asked. Tesla representatives must answer this. The person talking to us got fired." While India remains open to all global companies interested in penetrating the Indian EV market, Tesla's entry remains uncertain.

DPIIT secretary admitted that the reasons behind Tesla’s delay remain unclear. "You really have to ask the Tesla representatives as to what they're waiting for. We really don't know; we don't have much of an update on that," Singh said.

The specific reason for the Tesla representative's dismissal remains undisclosed. The circumstances leading to this decision are not publicly available. Saudi Arabia is in early talks with Elon Musk promoted electric vehicles maker Tesla to set up a manufacturing facility in the kingdom, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Saudi Arabia has been trying to win Tesla with the right to purchase certain quantities of metals and minerals the company needs for its electric vehicles from countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, the report said.

With this report, Tesla stock gains ground and rose 0.3% on premarket trading on Monday.

Saudi has been trying diversify its economy away from oil. The kingdom's economy slowed in the second quarter as oil-production cuts and a drop in prices pushed the country from being one of the fastest-growing Group of 20 countries to one of the slowest.

Interestingly, Saudi Arabia, with its sovereign Fund, is also an investor in former Tesla VP founded Lucid Motors, an American manufacturer of electric luxury sports cars and grand tourers. Lucid and Aston Martin have a common shareholder in Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). The Saudi wealth fund became Aston Martin's second-largest shareholder last year.

Saudi Arabia aims to have at least 30% of all cars in the Kingdom electric-powered by 2030 and Public Investment Fund (PIF)-backed Lucid Motors is preparing to roll out its first fully Saudi-assembled electric car by Q3 2023.

Bengaluru based Biomaterials startup altM announced that it has raised a USD 3.5 million Seed round led by Omnivore. Other investors include Theia Ventures, Thai Wah Ventures, Sanjiv Rangrass, Neha Mudaliar, Maninder Gulati from OYO, Mirik Gogri from Spectrum Impact, and Paula Mariwala from Aureolis Ventures.

Founded by former-Tesla senior executives — Apoorv Garg and Yugal Raj Jain — altM is Omnivore’s first investment from its third fund, which recently had a first close at USD 150 million. This is also the firm’s fourth investment under its OmniX Bio initiative, which was setup in 2021 to back early-stage agrifood life science startups.

altM aims to develop and manufacture scalable biomaterials to help large industries reduce their carbon footprints across their supply chains. The startup uses lignocellulosic agricultural residues as their raw material to produce advanced materials as alternatives to unsustainable incumbents. Yugal earlier worked at Tesla in engineering leadership roles, managing several factory and product launches. He is an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.Eng.) and Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (B.E.). The team also includes Dr. Harshad Velankar with over 20 years of academic and industrial experience across India, the US, and South Africa. He previously led bioprocess research at HPCL, with prior stints at Praj Industries and Reliance Life Sciences.
